Local band made good playing near San Diego

A band that originated in the San Diego neighborhood of Ocean Beach is performing in their hometown.

Slightly Stoopid formed in 1994, and described their musical style as a blend of blues, reggae, rock, and folk, with dashes of punk, metal, funk, and hip-hop. At the beginning of their career, they were influenced by punk rock bands like Sublime and Rancid, but more recently began experimenting with hip-hop. Reggae has always been part of their mix, influenced by artists like Buju Banton and Don Carlos.

They have released a total of nine studio albums and four live albums, dropping the most recent, “Everyday Life, Everyday People,” in 2018. Bradley Nowell, the frontman of the band Sublime, signed Slightly Stoopid to his Skunk Records label when they were in high school.

Their best-charting album was 2012’s “Top of the World,” which reached No. 13 but they have had great success touring. Among the countries they have visited are Germany, the UK, and Denmark, and they have appeared at festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella. A review of a live concert says:

“Bottom line, the San Diego locals, Ocean Beach to be precise delivered a stellar . . . show that left fans hypnotized and feeling like they were on top of the world.”

Slightly Stoopid will be at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, a San Diego suburb, on August 24. Professionals who book talent for performances like this often use poster printing to create publicity for them.
