Steven Patrick Morrissey is known simply as Morrissey, and was the frontman for The Smiths, an indie rock band that developed a cult following and enjoyed critical praise.
Following in their footsteps, the Sweet and Tender Hooligans are based in Los Angeles, and have been performing tribute shows for over 20 years, selling out houses everywhere. The Hooligans' frontman is Jose Maldonado, who is so convincing as Morrissey that the latter has occasionally appeared at a show, introducing the band with “Hello, we are the Sweet and Tender Hooligans.”
The Hooligans recreate the Smiths' performances exactly, and Maldonado sports the same hairstyle as Morrissey—a quiff, a distinctive style that combines a pompadour, popular in the 1950s, with a flattop. They got together in 1992, and began playing cover versions of Smith songs as a response to the breakup of the original group. They gained a following first regionally, then nationally. They crossed the ocean to perform in the UK, where they again packed the venues. The LA Weekly named the Hooligans the “Best Cover Band in Los Angeles.”
A review says:
"Jose Maldonado along with the entire band are amazing. If you are a Morrissey or Smiths fan, they are a MUST SEE!"
The Hooligans will be at the Music Box on April 3 at 9.00 pm. Flyer printing can be used to call attention to events like this.
