William Michael Albert Broad, who goes by the stage name Billy Idol, started his career playing guitar for Chelsea, a punk rock band. He left that group to form Generation X with Tony James, a former bandmate. Generation X dropped three albums in the UK, then broke up.
Idol relocated to New York City in 1981 to launch his solo career. His first studio album, “Billy Idol,” dropped in 1982 and was a solid success. Idol released the music videos “White Wedding” and “Dancing with Myself” to accompany those singles. They enjoyed significant airplay on MTV, and the exposure helped boost his career.
In 1983, Idol released “Rebel Yell,” his second album in the studio, and had a major commercial hit. “Eyes Without a Face” and “Rebel Yell,” both solid hits, were on this album, which went on to win the double Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), indicating that two million Copies sold in the United States.
