Parade of Lights returns to San Diego

For the 44th year, boat owners in San Diego will participate in the colorful Parade of Lights.

More than 80 boats are expected to take place in the event. The theme of the parade this year is ‘Christmas Around the World’, and boats that participate in the parade will incorporate this idea into their lighted designs. Prizes, including a ‘Best in Theme’ award, will be given by a panel of judges.

The parade draws approximately 100,000 visitors to San Diego Bay to watch as the elaborately lighted and decorated boats sail past. It takes the boats approximately two hours to complete the parade route, and there are many places along the bay where it is possible to get a good look at the event. The route leads from the south end of Shelter Island, past the Embarcadero, and winds up on Coronado, at the Ferry Landing.

The boats leave Shelter Island at about 5.30 pm, and arrive at the Embarcadero at approximately 6:30 pm. They get to Coronado at approximately 7:30 pm. Boats paraded past admiring viewers last Sunday, but for those who missed the first sailing, there is another parade on December 20.

Event organizers might consider creating seasonal, festive Banners to hang at various points on shore, where spectators can see and enjoy them.
