New nonstop flights to serve San Diego

In order to meet a growing customer demand, two airlines that fly to and from San Diego will soon add additional flights to the Southern California city.

Alaska Airlines has announced it will add three direct daily flights to San Jose from San Diego. The new service is scheduled to start June 5.

Southwest Airlines is also increasing flights, saying it will add nonstop flights to Milwaukee from San Diego. At present, air travel to Milwaukee is described as a weekend-only, “seasonal” service. Adding daily flights to Milwaukee will fill a “void in the Great Lake region”, according to Hampton Brown, who works for San Diego International Airport as its air service development expert.

According to Brown, Milwaukee is the “seventh largest market . . . without daily, year-round service” from San Diego. The city is an important business center for the Midwest and the Great Lakes, and offers an efficient link to Amtrak's trains. He added that San Diego needs a quick way to access Wisconsin's primary business and population center. Service to Milwaukee will begin August 7.

Also on that day, Southwest will continue its expansion in the Midwest by adding nonstop daily flights to St. Louis.

Officials of both airlines could create Banners to hang in the airport announcing the new services. Banners would be particularly effective with the terminal's high ceilings.
