The San Diego Human Society now has an onsite hospital, and revealed the facility to the public recently. The hospital has no equivalent anywhere in California, and will allow a number of surgeries to be performed simultaneously.
The facility is named for the philanthropists who made it possible: the Pilar and Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine. The project cost $1.8m, and has a number of capabilities other shelters do not possess.
As an example, veterinarians will be able to do orthopedic procedures, as well as routine neuter and spaying operations, according to Audra Hanthorn, the hospital’s director. At the same time, other patients may be having their teeth cleaned. The space is so large that Hanthorn believes they will be able to perform as many as 20 surgeries at the same time, which averages 1,000 animals weekly.
Assemblyman Todd Gloria was at the dedication ceremony, and said he believes all San Diego residents can take pride in the fact the Human Society is progressive, and treats animals with great respect in an environment that is now even more pleasant due to the new hospital. When new facilities like this are created, they can use brochure printing to create Booklets that describe the services.
The new facility will also be a teaching hospital for students of veterinary medicine. At the moment, four interns are working in the center, and there are externs from throughout the nation present at well.
