Reik first got together in 2003 in Mexicali, in Baja California, with founding members Gilberto Marin Espinoza on guitar, Julio Ramírez Eguía handling backing vocals and guitar, and Jesús Alberto Navarro Rosas taking care of the lead vocals.
The first five albums released by the group were labeled “Latin pop,” but since 2015, with a more urban edge to their sound, Reik has won a number of awards including four Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica awards, and, in 2019, a Latin Billboard Music Award for “Latin Pop Song of the Year” for “Me Niego.”
When Reik released their first demos in 2003, the hits “Ahora Sin Ti” and “Levemente” made them instant stars in the underground club scene in Mexico. Their fine musicianship coupled with movie-star good looks made them a favorite with audiences who scrambled for tickets to their live concerts, which featured heavy guitar work. In 2005, they dropped their debut album “Reik,” which had three singles that went to No. 1, and sent them on their first tour of the United States.
They released their latest studio album, “Ahora,” meaning “Now,” in 2019. A review says:
"REIK's concert exceeded my expectations. . . . Their professionalism was top notch. Would definitely see them again!"
Reik will be at the Civil Theatre in downtown San Diego on April 8. Events like this can receive effective publicity when organizers use poster printing.
