Commuters who ride the Coaster from San Diego's north county into the city recently had to find alternate routes, as did Amtrak passengers.
The rail corridor that runs north from San Diego, through San Diego County and into Los Angeles, was shut down for three weekends in January, disrupting all rail service.
According to the North County Transit District (NCTD), repair crews have been working on replacing aging trestles and bridges that cross the Los Penasquitos Lagoon. They are also putting in a crossover track.
Amtrak had to cancel three of its trains, but provided replacement bus service between Oceanside and San Diego, and between Oceanside and Solana Beach.
The NCTD, which operates the Coaster, did not offer to provide bus service, but did suggest that Coaster riders could use the Route 101 bus.
On the final weekend of construction, crews went to work at 12.30 am Saturday and worked until Monday at 3:00 am, so that they could reopen the tracks for the Monday morning commuter trains. The NCTD also warned residents in the Los Penasquitos area that there would be high noise levels because of the construction being performed in the area.
