Joe Satriani is known for his technique as well as his ability to play a wide range of genres including funk, heavy metal, jazz, and the blues. He also enjoys experimenting with techno and electronica. He became interested in the guitar when he was 14, spurred by the death of Jimi Hendrix, his idol. It only took Satriani four years from the time he began playing until he was training with jazz masters like pianist Lennie Tristano and guitarist Billy Bauer.
Satriani soon had students of his own, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and was establishing himself in Berkeley, California. He networked with other musicians and began to release his own music. However, although he was respected within his community, his breakthrough did not come until 1987 when he released “Surfing with the Alien.” He followed this up with “Flying in a Blue Dream” in 1989. The album was a commercial and critical success and earned Satriani a Grammy nomination in the category Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The album has since been certified Gold, and Satriani has continued to thrill audiences with his guitar mastery.
