Grant given to San Diego museum

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded a three-year, $150,000 grant to the San Diego Air & Space-Museum. The museum was chosen from over 500 applicants.

The museum has received a grant from this organization at least once before, and used it to start what it calls its ‘Great Explorations’ project, an effort to provide online access to some of its collection. The earlier grant allowed the museum to put over 170,000 items online, including films and photos. However, there are still thousands of other artifacts to which there is no access for the public. The new grant will go to fund the second phase of the project, at which time the museum will photograph, catalog, and put the additional items on display, enabling people to access them through social media.

Many people will benefit from the museum's work, such as teachers, researchers, students, authors, scholars, aviation fans, and filmmakers, in addition to professionals at other museums. The project will allow them to explore the museum’s collection without having to make the trip to San Diego. In addition, members of the general public will enjoy tagging images with information, which will become part of the object's metadata.
