Alton Brown is probably best known as the host of several shows on the Food Network, including “Good Eats” and “Iron Chef America.” He created and hosted “Good Eats” for 16 seasons, and was the principal commentator on “Iron Chef America.” When a spin-off series “The Next Iron Chef” aired, Brown hosted it for five years.
Brown was born in Los Angeles but opted to attend the University of Georgia early in the 1980s. He got his start in the entertainment industry as a cinematographer shooting music videos, including R.E.M.’s “The One I Love.”
Brown disliked what he saw as poor-quality American cooking shows, so he decided to produce his own program. To prepare, he enrolled in the New England Culinary Institute, despite admitting he struggled with science in both college and high school. However, he says he wanted to learn the science behind cooking so he could understand the process itself.
His performances include a monologue, live music, and what he calls a:
“. . . very large, very unusual culinary demonstration.”
He also provides puns about pop culture, history lessons, and frequently wears “campy” outfits.
Brown will bring his Alton Brown Live: Last Bite tour to the Balboa Theatre on April 5. Organizers who book this type of show will often use poster printing to advertise them.
