A developer, also a long-time tenant of the Port District, has been given another chance to build a luxury hotel on San Diego's Harbor Island.
The San Diego Port Commissioners have agreed to give Sunroad Enterprises an additional 120 days to entirely rework their proposal for a 450- to 500-room hotel, which can be either a one building design, or cover two buildings.
Sunroad's original proposal was to build the hotel in two phases, starting with a hotel offering 325 rooms. The commissioners want it built in a single phase, and also requested that the original design be enhanced. When new properties like this are constructed, management has the opportunity to create entirely new, attractive Letterheads for use at the establishment.
The commissioners have stipulated Sunroad's design has to include what they call “mini destination areas”, defined as outdoor cafes, restaurants, and public art. It is the commissioners' hope that these extra attractions will encourage visitors to explore the site, which covers seven acres, on foot. Another condition imposed on the developer is that the hotel must affiliate itself with one of the upscale hotel brands such as Hilton's Curio Collection, Hyatt Place, or Marriott's Aloft hotels.
Even if everything falls into place, there will still be an environmental review that could take months, and the project will have to win approval from the California Coastal Commission. Sunroad will probably not break ground for two years.
