What's Happening in Poway, CA…

The San Diego Board of Supervisors recently announced they have approved the county's annual budget for 2019-2020. The budget is $6.25bn.

The new budget includes $1.3bn for general government and finance, $2bn designated for public safety, and $2.3bn earmarked to be used for health and human services. In addition, new positions targeting environmental problems have been created.

More money has been set aside for increasing law enforcement, as well as upping the number of personnel in the Department of Health and Human Services. There will also be funds available for public assistance and health issues that are emerging. The county will now be in a position to offer homeowners incentives to help prevent wildfires, provide more services to immigrants, and service people in need with emergency housing.

Although the budget provides funds to hire new county employees, it also includes provisions for one refugee health coordinator, nine additional positions in the Air Pollution Control District, three positions in support of the Climate Action Plan, six people to support outreach efforts to the homeless, four positions in veterans' services, and an environmental grant writer. The new budget also has provisions to protect species and habitats, a half-million dollars to support the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program, $200,000 earmarked for the Public Defender to provide specialized counsel to immigrants, and over S1m in grants to encourage the ecofriendly use of agricultural equipment.
