Fruit Bats highlights the songwriting skills of Eric D. Johnson, its founder. As the time he started the new outfit, Johnson was in a band called I, Rowboat, and worked in other bands as a jobbing guitarist. He was also an instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. However, he still wanted a genuine musical career, so he asked Brian Belval and Dan Strack, who were also members of I, Rowboat, to form a band to play his music, and Fruit Bats was born. Fittingly, they called their 2001 debut album “Echolocation.”
They toured throughout 2001, either headlining shows or backing up other indie rock outfits and gaining fans. Their road trip led them to a New Mexico band, The Shins, and the groups toured together. Fruit Bats were signed by Sub Pop, The Shins’ label, in 2002. In their career, the Fruit Bats have released 11 albums, dropping their latest, “Siamese Dream,” in 2021.
