For the first time, the Amgen Tour took place in San Diego earlier this month.
The tour has been held in San Diego County, Rancho Bernardo, and Escondido, but never in San Diego proper.
The event is a bicycle race in the style of the Tour de France, where cyclists ride over hundreds of miles of demanding routes that include byways, highways, and the state's coastline. The teams are comprised of professional riders and include those who have ridden in the Tour de France, as well as the Olympics. In San Diego, 144 riders began the first stage of the race, a 106-mile course starting at Mission Bay. The entire course is 782 miles long.
From the bay, the riders went through Balboa Park and south to Imperial Beach, then turned east through Chula Vista. From there, they kept going east toward the mountain town of Jamul, then turned back toward San Diego, going through El Cajon and San Carlos, then through Mission Valley, finishing with a dash down Ingram Street to Mission Bay.
Kristin Klein, the tour president, praised San Diego officials and said they had done a superb job in getting their community to support the race.
San Diego officials might consider using Presentation Folders to organize information about the city, and represent it to tour organizers to invite them to consider San Diego again in future as a venue.
