The genre is characterized by an emphasis on atmosphere rather than traditional structure. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard formed Dead Can Dance in 1981 in Melbourne, Australia, and moved to London the next year. The group has disbanded and reformed several times, and is currently back together and touring. Dead Can Dance's music was described by Australian music historian Ian McFarlane, as:
“constructed soundscapes of mesmerising [sic] grandeur and solemn beauty . . .”
The band draws on such material as art rock, mantras, Middle Eastern music, Gregorian chant, Gaelic folk songs, and African polyrhythms, mixing the genres together to create something unique.
