Steven Patrick Morrissey, who goes by his last name, became famous as the lyricist and frontman of The Smiths, a rock band that existed from 1982 to 1987. Although their tenure was brief, they left a lasting legacy, influencing many of the groups that came after them. BBC News’s Ian Youngs said they were:
“. . . the band that inspired deeper devotion than any British group since the Beatles."
In 2007, Simon Goddard said the group was:
“. . . the one truly vital voice of the '80s" and "the most influential British guitar group of the decade."
Despite their success, the group’s members went their own ways, with Morrissey beginning his solo career in 1987. He became known for his baritone voice and his lyrics, which often dealt with themes of longing and emotional isolation, leavened with dark humor and self-deprecating wit. By 2020, he had released 13 albums, three of which climbed to No.1 in the UK, as well as charting in the United States. A concert review says:
“Wow. Morrissey has been my favourite artist for a long time. But last night just exceeded my expectations by far.”
