Agreement to revitalize Navy property signed

The U.S. Navy has a significant presence in San Diego, which will likely grow closer with the signing of an agreement to redevelop a Navy property.

Recently, regional transportation planners were joined by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and Richard V. Spencer, the Secretary of the Navy, to sign an agreement to redevelop Naval Base Point Loma, Old Town Complex.

Faulconer said the presence of the Secretary was significant, since it showed that Washington, D.C. is on board with plans to work on the property. He added that the agreement takes the relationship between the city and the Navy to another level, as work could soon begin on one of the largest projects in the history of San Diego.

The Navy property that is the subject of the planning agreement comprises about 70 acres near San Diego International Airport, just off I-5. Redeveloping the property could encourage a public-private partnership with the ability to give the Navy up-to-date facilities, as well as helping solve some of the transportation problems San Diego faces. The Naval Base Point Loma Old Town Complex could become a regional transportation hub, with connections that will make it easy for passengers to get to the airport.

The agreement indicates that Navy leaders are serious about working with San Diego officials and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) on the landmark project. Print shops can help create newsletters to inform residents of the status of projects like this.
