What's Happening in Orange, CA…

Street fair showcases international cultures

A celebration of culture, community, and tradition is coming to the streets of Orange.

The event was first influenced by the Orange Free Fair of 1910, which honored the 1910 Los Angeles International Aviation Meet. After not happening for many years, the present version of the fair began again in 1973 to celebrate the City of Orange’s hundredth year. It has grown into a big local custom, attracting thousands of people every year.

A big part of the fair is its many food booths run by local non-profit groups from around the world. These stalls serve traditional dishes and drinks from different countries, like German bratwursts, Greek gyros, Mexican tacos, or Japanese sushi for example. This variety in cuisine gives those who come to taste various flavors from around the world. Poster printing is popular among vendors.

The Orange International Street Fair is self-funded. OISF is hosted in the City of Orange, however, it compensates the City for support services such as police, fire and public works. The city is also reimbursed for traffic closures and cleanup after the event. Those interested in supporting the event can sign up as sponsors with different tiers.

Activities appropriate for families are a main part of the fair, having a special area for children that includes games, crafts and entertainment designed to suit their tastes.

The Orange International Street Fair is held in Old Towne Orange, California, over Labor Day weekend. This year it will be from August 30th to September 1st.
