Medical center in Orange receives donation of toys

UC Irvine Medical Center's pediatric patients received a treat recently, when over 100 handmade wooden toys were delivered to the facility in Orange. They are the work of the Orange County Woodworkers Association.

Gary Phipps and Bill Rogers handled the delivery of the toys. All of them had been tested for safety, drilled, cut, shaped, sawed, sanded, and then given a coat of shellac safe for children. The toys are interactive, and include doll cradles, ducks, tanks, trains, trucks, and cars.

The association builds approximately 4,100 toys each year for children in need. Rogers, Phipps, and the other 40 members of the club take the task seriously. Phipps is a retired orthopedic surgeon, and went on to explain different wood grains, and the types of woods the artists used when they made the toys; most of the woodworkers used oak.

Bill Rogers is the “head elf” of the association, and says everyone takes pride in their work, and enjoys the camaraderie found in meeting and working with friends on something they love to do, and which has the benefit of helping children. Organizations like this could use banner printing to decorate a special area where they distribute the toys.

Erica Magnuson, who is with the medial center as a child life specialist, says the toys help reduce children's anxiety, particularly in the cases of trauma and burn patients. She recalls when the comical sounds a wooden duck made “walking” encouraged a youngster to do the same.
