DJ Quik, a DJ, songwriter, rapper, and record producer is known for his involvement in the G-funk (short for “gangsta funk”) style of hip-hop that originated on the West Coast. In his career, Quik (real name David Marvin Blake) has collaborated with Shaquille O’Neal, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and other big names. Among his hits are the songs “Jus Lyke Compton,” “Born and Raised in Compton,” “Tonite,” and “Dollaz + Sense.” As he was born in Compton, the reference to the city makes sense and pays homage to his hometown.
Suga Free, a native of Gardena, California, was raised in Oakland and now makes his home base in Pomona. He began his career in 1997, when he released “Street Gospel,” his debut album, which was produced by DJ Quik. The album was successful, climbing to No. 37 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. His next albums were “The New Testament,” which he dropped in 2004, and “Just Add Water” in 2006.
The Chicago Tribute review of the album described Suga Free as:
". . . charismatic and funny, with a rapid- fire-yet-conversational style."
After a hiatus, Suga Free released “The Resurrection” in 2019.
DJ Quik and Suga Free will appear at the Quiet Cannon in Montebello on December 17. To bring audiences to events like these, organizers can use poster printing to create striking advertising.
