Drake Park receives playground makeover

Drake Park in Long Beach held a grand opening ceremony on January 12 for its new playground equipment for kids. This is the fifth upgrade for playground equipment in Long Beach funded by the Measure A organization.

The funding for the improvement was approved in 2016 by voters. The equipment in the park has two structures – one is for children ages 2-5 years old, and the second for ages 5-12.

Mayor Robert Garcia said Measure A is funding repairs and upgrades to playgrounds in Long Beach to improve safety and quality of life for families.

The new playground has a butterfly garden theme. It will be integrated with Drake’s Parks gardens and the front yard of the Wilmore Historic district.

Kids can enjoy monkey bars, slides, and large butterflies that tower over the equipment. The new apparatus develops climbing, balance, and coordination in children, and comes in bright colors of orange, yellow, and blue. Long Beach has print shops that provide banner printing for new parks and playgrounds like this.

Quoted by Press Telegram, Lena Gonzalez said this was an “exciting enhancement” to the area’s parks. She serves on the local council and looks forward to seeing kids playing on the new equipment.

Overall, the project cost $942,900, most of which came from Measure A funds. Long Beach still has one more playground to upgrade after Drake Park, the city has said.
