Lemon Park murals set for restoration

Two famous Fullerton paintings are nearing full restoration, and officials are looking for money to restore more murals located in Lemon Park.

"Brown Car" and "The Town I Live In" are two of the most prominent murals and are estimated to be about half a decade old. Drew Stirdivant, a local artist, began restoring the two art pieces towards the end of summer and is nearing completion. Graphic design can often be used to help with large art installations.

Six paintings were put up in 1978. They were created thanks to a project organized by a teacher named David Whalen, with help from local children. Emigdio Vasquez Sr., a well-known local muralist, completed two additional murals in the 1990s with the assistance of young people within the community. The panels are inspired by the local community's Mexican-American background.

Before the present repairs, the most recent mural to be restored was "Nios del Mundo," which was repaired in 2019 by Emigdio "Higgy" Vasquez Jr., who is Vasquez Sr.'s son. With the current double-mural repair, the restoration project is halfway finished.

Councilman Ahmad Zahra, the leading force behind the fundraising efforts, commented to say:
“After things settled down after the pandemic, there was really no funding from the city for anything like this, so I decided to raise the funds independently. We set up a special donation link and special accounts for the murals through the city.”

Officials predict that the eight-mural project will cost up to $20,000 per restoration.
