Fullerton considers future of fire services

Fullerton’s leaders are set to make a decision on whether to continue paying for its own fire department or to outsource its emergency responder needs to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).

According to the Orange County Register, the Fullerton Fire Department has been facing challenges retaining its personnel following recent fiscal changes in the city. Last year, the city officially requested a proposal on how the city could cut costs and improve service to the area by merging with the OCFA, which serves large parts of the county with emergency services

Uncertainty over whether contracting the OCFA would actually cut costs has kept the proposal in limbo. Initial projections from the OCFA showed that the city could potentially save millions by making a deal, but more recent projections from independent consultants give a different picture, suggesting that Fullerton is better off running its own department. Proposals like these tend to be presented on documents that feature official Letterheads.

The disparity is due to the fact that the OCFA’s proposal is based on Fullerton having a sustainable fire department that continues to run as is, but the indications are that Fullerton cannot continue to run a fire department on the current numbers. One consultant’s report suggested that the city would be forced to increase its pay rate by about 16% in order to retain its staff.
