An alumnus recognized by California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) as a recipient of the 2022 Vision & Visionaries Award has reminded graduates to stay open-minded and seek adventures.
The award was set up in 1994 and represents the highest honor that can be bestowed upon community supporters and alumni by CSUF.
This year’s recipient for the Distinguished Alumnus Award was Douglas G. Steward, who graduated in 1987. He says his time spent as a Titan is what helped him find the path the wanted his life to go in. He was one of five alumni (four Titans, one honorary) recognized at the recent awards.
Stewart’s career was based on development and strategic planning for large organizations, although he signed up at CSUF to study music. He never planned on being a concert pianist and it was not until his final year that he his career path diverged when he was asked to take on a role at the Development and Fundraising offices. The last year of his time there was spent developing a program for corporate relations. Business Cards are good tools for fostering corporate relations in situations like this.
Thanks to the unique path that he took, Stewart feels that students should not place too much pressure on themselves to follow through with specific fields. He went on to say:
“College is a great time to explore things, and a big university like Cal State Fullerton is plum with opportunities for you. Do other things and open your mind and your eyes to other possibilities.”
