Mariachi band with a difference coming to Escondido

An mariachi band will appear in Escondido soon. In something of a rarity, the entire band is made up of women.

The Los Angeles-based Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea was founded by Cindy Shea in 1999. They made history in 2009, when they were nominated for a Grammy, the first time this honor has gone to an all-female band. They won that year in the category “Best Regional Mexican Music Album” for “Canciones de Amor.” They claimed an award again at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014 for “Best Regional Mexican Music Album” with “A Mi Manera.”

In the 1990s, Shea landed a gig playing trumpet for Mariachi Las Alondras, an all-female group. They split in 1999, at which time Shea founded Mariachi Divas. They got their big break in 2003, when Stan Freese, who booked talent for Disney, hired them as Disneyland Resort’s official mariachi band. They soon became a highlight at Disney’s California Adventure, and at the “Tortilla Joe” restaurant in Downtown Disney.

They have gone on to make numerous television appearances, and have appeared on such occasions as the inauguration of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and at the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world – Fiesta Broadway in Los Angeles.

Mariachi Divas will appear at the Concert Hall at California Center for The Arts Escondido on April 16. Audiences enjoy learning about performers, which is information that can be provided in a program created using brochure printing.
