Time marches on at Encinitas school

Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary school in Encinitas has dug up a time capsule and will soon bury another one.

The first capsule was buried in 1994, when the school opened, and was dug up again last September. Inside, among other items like leather skates and a ‘Goosebumps’ book, was one particularly dear to San Diegans: an old newspaper with a ‘Chargers Storm Back’ headline. That year, the Chargers won the AFC West.

The latest time capsule is a temporary cardboard one made by Olivenhain Pioneer’s principal, Beth Cameron. On Friday, March 27, Cameron called an assembly, and 660 students from various grades presented items to go into the new capsule, which will be buried in June. It will be dug up in another 20 years.

The students tossed in things like flash drives, iPads, a book called ‘The Titan’s Curse’ by Rick Riordan, and a Dr. Seuss work named ‘The Bippolo Seed’. Time will tell if these items are still in use when the new capsule is unearthed.

Cameron said she had thought of displaying the new capsule, as well as the contents of the old one, in a glass case, but decided against it. Instead, the new capsule will be buried in the same spot as the old one.

Cameron might consider working with brochure printers to create a booklet about the time capsules for students and parents.
