Lecture worms its way into Encinitas

Worms generate all kinds of reactions, from “bait” to “eww,” but now people are invited to learn all about them and their importance to the ecosystem.

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation, a nonprofit organization based in San Diego, is inviting everyone to attend its “All About Worms” workshop, coming up soon. The non-profit focuses on water conservation, composting, and zero waste, and will explain how valuable worms are to a healthy planet.

The Solana Center's environmental educator, Kelsea Jacobsen, said that most people don't realize how large a role worms play in keeping the earth thriving. She explained they are essential to keeping soil healthy so that it can, in turn, grow healthy plants, which are eaten by people and animals. Things that were once living, such as organic food scraps, are decomposed by worms into smaller pieces, such as particles of soil, which provide nutrients to other living organisms.

The workshop will discuss basic worm composting (vermicomposting), which will teach attendees how to compost using red wriggler worms. The session will also discuss what and how to feed worms, what materials and tools are needed to create a worm bin, and how to gather and use worm castings. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts for events like this.

The ‘All About Worms’ workshop will be held at the Encinitas Community Center, from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon next Sunday, September 14.
