Ground broken for Encinitas school

Architects broke ground Saturday, August 23, on the third phase of construction of Encinitas' Grauer School.

Phase III will be home to 10,000 square feet of classrooms designed to be eco-friendly. They will include new spaces for the math and English departments. Approximately 150 people, including the current and former mayors of Encinitas, attended the ceremony.

The Grauer School, which is located at 1500 South El Camino Real, was deliberately designed to handle a small number of students. At present, there are about 150 students in attendance, in grades 7 through 12, meaning there are only 25 students in each grade.

The architect on the project is Scott Thomas of Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects, who is looking forward to incorporating both special features and green elements into the school, which is aiming for LEED Gold certification. The firm will be using recycled materials, solar panels, efficient mechanical systems, and energy-efficient lighting to meet this goal.

The new construction includes 13 classrooms, among which are four seminar rooms, along with new locker rooms and restrooms. Outdoors, a new central courtyard will boast a water feature, a gazebo, and a new arbor/trellis to help visitors find the main entry. Construction is slated for completion in 2015.

School officials could work with a banner printing company to create a colorful, welcoming banner for the opening ceremonies.
