Encinitas Fire Station No. 6, located in Olivenhain, the most eastern district of the city, is undergoing renovations that are almost complete. It was revealed this month that the station, on Rancho Santa Fe Road, will soon have firefighters stationed there 24 hours a day. This will no doubt be a relief to the community, since California's well-known wildfire season will soon be at its height.
A former office building is being renovated to house the station, which will include a kitchen, showers, and dormitories. The station is to replace a ‘mini-station’ set up in 2012. This June, members of the Encinitas City Council approved the hiring of three new firefighters, who will man the new station full-time.
Olivenhain is a community comprised mostly of single-family homes, most of which have large yards from a half-acre to five acres. Grass can dry out and provide fuel for a fire, so having a full-time fire department is important to such an area. According to one report, before the mini-station opened, it took ambulance and fire personnel an average of 11 minutes to respond to calls in Olivenhain, and even then they were only able to get to 80% of those deemed “high priority”. This is a significantly longer time than that in the rest of the city, says the report.
Once renovations are finished, city officials could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for Olivenhain residents, letting them know the station is open and will now have personnel on site 24 hours a day.
