For the eighth year in a row, Encinitas has been designated as a ‘Tree City USA’ by the Arbor Day Foundation. Officials announced the honor recently.
Cities that win this designation have to meet a number of criteria set by the Foundation. The city must have a department dedicated specifically to urban forestry or trees. It also has to have an ordinance in place to care for and protect its trees, and finally, its annual budget for forestry has to be at least $2 per capita. Cities that win this designation are also required to celebrate Arbor Day formally, by issuing a proclamation and observing the holiday.
Encinitas has an Urban Forestry Advisory Committee to manage the city's trees, and spends $10 per capita in the effort. The committee oversees tree health and preservation, and also protects properties from any negative effects of tree growth.
San Diego County is home to several cities that were designated as a Tree City USA. The others are Santee, Poway, El Cajon, Coronado, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside, La Mesa, and San Diego. Graphic design provides a way a community can incorporate an honor like this into official Signs.
Catherine Blakespear, the mayor of Encinitas, said the community was proud of winning the designation, adding that residents understood how important it is to help the tree canopy remain in good condition.
