An Encinitas landmark has given its name to an upcoming run.
The Cardiff Kook is a statue located in Encinitas's Cardiff by the Sea neighborhood. The official name of the artwork is “The Magic Carpet Ride,” and it features a surfer on a board. However, the surfer's pose is so unorthodox that local surfers have said he looks like a “kook.” Decorations are frequently found on the statue, and at times, he is decked out in a complete costume.
The Kook Run is an “Out and Back” race with the start and finish line under the Historic Encinitas Sign. The race is on Highway 101, with runners starting in the southbound lanes, and coming back on the northbound side. South Cardiff State Beach will be the turnaround point, and runners of all skill levels will enjoy beautiful views of the coast.
The race includes a costume contest for those who would care to dress up. There are prizes for the best costume with a football theme; one for the best group, and one for the costume with the best “Kook” theme.
The day starts with registration for the race at 6:00 am, and for the costume contest at 7:00 am. The elite/10K race starts at 7:15 am, and the 5K at 8:00 am. Awards ceremonies will follow the races and contest, and the event will end at 9:30 am.
The Kook Run is scheduled for Superbowl weekend, February 7, 2021. Banner printing is often used to mark outdoor courses like this.
