Encinitas theater to screen dolphin production

‘Soul in the Sea’, a documentary about a bottle-nosed dolphin named Moko, will be screened tonight La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. The showing was arranged by Dana Mermaid to help educate the public about dolphins.

Moko, who has now passed away, was very popular and allowed people to swim with him. The film was shot by New Zealand filmmaker Amy Taylor and previously aired at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2013. The film came to the attention of Mermaid, a “dolphin whisperer”, who wanted to present the film in Encinitas and felt the Independence Day week was the time to do so.

Part of Mermaid's aim is to help dolphins gain the same independence humans enjoy. Mermaid argues that dolphins have emotions the same as humans, and she hopes the film will help people understand the problems dolphins currently face, and learn ways they can help.

The film begins at 7:00 pm this evening (July 3), at the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and audience members will be able to ask Mermaid questions after the film. All proceeds from the film go to fund The Dolphin Project, run by Ric O'Barry, the aim of which is to stop the capture and killing of wild dolphins.

Film-showers can work with a flyer printing company to develop hand-outs to be distributed and encourage a good attendance.
