Encinitas students meet with filmmakers

Encinitas students eager to learn about making movies had a chance to talk to filmmakers recently.

The Encinitas Student Film Symposium was held April 23. Admission was free, and 100 high school and college students spent the day with people involved in film.

The day started with presentations by various speakers, and then two productions were performed. One was a dramatic scene, and the second a lighter work. Students were seated around the sets, and the filmmakers told them why they had made the various lighting, directing, acting, and camera placement choices they had.

The industry professionals pre-invited some of the students to come early and help light the sets. Professionals and students worked together in intense collaboration for the entire day, even eating lunch together. After lunch, students had their choice of participating in one of two workshops; one focusing on the techniques learned before lunch, and the other considering such issues as editing, screenwriting, costuming, and makeup.

Francine Filsinger, president of San Diego Filmmakers, organized the event. She was able to bring producer Brent Altomare, director Jordan Roberts, and Greg Lefevre of CNN together with the students. Those taking part were invited to present their short films during the Encinitas Student Film Festival, slated for May 15 at the La Paloma.

Event organizers could consider creating Flyers that recap the event, and ask students to remember to save the date next year.
