Sarah Ludington, a member of the Torrey Pines High School varsity dance team, is also a member of the dance troupe Dance2Heal. In late August, She and three other Dance2Heal members presented a program at a heart clinic in Encinitas where Sarah’s mother, Dr. Katherine Ludington, practices.
Dr. Ludington hosted the event, and Sarah and some of her mother’s patients danced in the doctor’s office for about an hour.
Ludington got the idea after seeing how happy dance made her grandmother as she went through chemotherapy. Ludington reports that she and her grandmother would sometimes dance spontaneously, which made them both happy.
Ludington’s grandmother recovered, but Sarah wondered if she could use what she had learned about dancing with her to help other seniors. Sarah decided to start Dance2Heal, a group of young dancers who perform both for others, and with them. They dance with children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
At the center, the teens did tap, contemporary, and hip-hop routines, then invited all the patients to learn some of the moves. In the end, they did a group hip-hop dance to ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake. Dr. Ludington said it is her hope that some of her patients will consider dancing to remain healthy, as it does not require special equipment and is not a strenuous form of exercise.
