Encinitas library hosts Zooinitas

A total of 17 Encinitas artists have joined together to help animals caught up in domestic violence situations.

The Zooinitas Extravaganza Exhibition is a collection of art inspired by animals, and will be open through August 24. Proceeds from the exhibition will go to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s Animal Safehouse Program, which provides a location in which victims of domestic violence can keep their companion animals.

Amy Heflin, program director for the Safehouse concept, says on the City of Encinitas website that once abused people know their pets are safe, they can take steps to get out of the situation without fearing that the abuser will target the animal. The program also provides help to seniors, veterans, accident victims, and those who have lost their homes in the recent California wildfires.

The exhibit opened July 26 with a reception featuring art demos, live music, a dog toy drive, a silent auction, and pet adoptions on-site. Heflin added that it is important for the community to work together to help victims of domestic violence.

The exhibition is open seven days a week, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5:00 pm on Sundays, at the Encinitas Library Art Gallery.

Zooinitas officials could work with a banner printing company to create a color flag to display outside the library, inviting people to come in and see the artworks.
