Encinitas encouraged to fix it, not trash it

People have a chance to help the environment, save money, and fight our wasteful society by not overloading the landfills. One way to do this is to repair items instead of tossing them out, and locals are about to get some help in this effort.

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation is collaborating with GSA Eco-Vamp and Zero Waste San Diego to host a SD Fixit Clinic, this one being held in Encinitas. Events like this are a useful place for skilled repair people to distribute their Business Cards.

The move toward repairing items rather than throwing them away is growing into a worldwide effort, as people realize how expensive and wasteful the current consumer society is.

The upcoming event asks people to bring in their non-functioning or broken items, including clothing, bicycles, toys, computers, appliances, electronics, and more to the clinic, where they will be assessed, disassembled, and potentially repaired. The hosting organizations will provide specialty tools and the necessary workspace, as well as guidance to help attendees take apart, troubleshoot, and repair their broken items. Whether or not the item is ultimately repaired, owners will learn a great deal about the way the product was manufactured, and how it is supposed to perform.

The SD Fixit Clinic will be held August 14, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation on El Camino Real in Encinitas. The event is free.
