Encinitas considers selling city property

Encinitas has hit upon the idea of selling some city-owned property to raise some cash, according to U-T San Diego.

According to a June 4 article, properties it might sell include an old fire station, and the land containing the Hamilton Children's Garden. A total of seven parcels owned by Encinitas are being considered, either because they are being leased to others, or because the city no longer uses them.

The property on which the fire station stands comprises 9.5 acres, and has already been subdivided into 10 lots. Encinitas staff members suggest that this site will generate the most interest since it has already been broken up.

The Hamilton Children's Garden is part of the larger San Diego Botanic Garden, which currently has a 55-year lease on the property. Councilors have suggested that the Children's Garden should be transferred over to the Botanic Garden to ensure that the property remains intact and the gardens remain open.

Julian Duval, President and CEO of the garden, said would be keen to see the transfer go through, since the Children's Garden has proven to be the most successful addition to the Botanic Garden in its history.

Since this is a matter of great public interest and importance, Encinitas could work with brochure printers to create a mailer for residents, explaining the city's plans to sell various properties and asking for feedback.
