Encinitas celebrates its sister city

Encinitas is gearing up to honor its sister city, Amakusa, with a Japan Festival.

According to a July 31, 2015 news item, this is the sixth annual event to celebrate the special relationship between the two communities, and will be held in the Encinitas Library.

Events on the schedule are a musical trio comprised of a piano, koto (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument), and a shakuhachi (bamboo flute). The Japanese choral group The Harmonies will appear, and visitors can also enjoy a fashion show featuring traditional kimonos. Attendees will even be able to Skype their greetings to participants in Amakusa.

Other activities include prize drawings, a demonstration of a tea ceremony, a giveaway of Japanese Books, and washi Tape crafts. Washi tape is a self-adhesive tape made of natural fibers commonly found in Japan. The tape can be used in hundreds of ways, from wrapping packages to decorating walls.

The Japan Festival is one of the library's ‘Signature Events’, a series of programs held each year that typify the spirit of the community served by the branch library.

The festival is slated for this Saturday, August 8, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event is free, and appropriate for people of all ages.

Library officials might consider working with brochure printers on a booklet for attendees that explores aspects of Japanese culture in greater depth than can be enjoyed in such a brief time.
