A year after San Diego County pledged the sum of $2.1m to the San Diego Botanic Garden to help it with the second phase of the children's garden, it has been decided that the money will be used for other projects at the garden, which is located in Encinitas.
The money will now go to three major projects: restoring the Larabee House, converting Lawn House from storage to a library and visitors center, and creating a maintenance and administration building.
The money was originally earmarked for the construction of an indoor pavilion, but the project was tabled as negotiations proved to be time consuming, involving various land swaps between the city and county. The efforts to reach agreement were also delaying a conservatory project, for which funds were being raised.
As difficulties mounted, Dave Roberts, the county supervisor, asked Julian Duval, executive director of the garden, what other projects the money could support, and that led to the three projects mentioned above. Duval believes the improvements will make the garden more user-friendly, as well as more functional.
Garden management might like to work with brochure printers to create a booklet about the projects, and distribute it to residents of the area, and particularly those who have contributed to the garden. They might like to know the reasoning and where the work stands now.
