Encinitas announces new awards program

Encinitas's Environmental Commission has announced a new program that recognizes environmental achievements made by organizations, individuals, and businesses in the city.

The program is known as the Environmental Award Program, or EAP, and chooses winners in two categories, who each receive an original award made by a local Encinitas artist.

The awards are presented annually, one going to businesses and the other to nonprofit organizations. Candidates, who must be residents of Encinitas or doing business in the city, are nominated by their peers, with final selections being made by a jury of recognized leaders in environmental concerns.

The city is currently seeking proposals from local Encinitas artists who are interested in creating the awards for the EAP winners. The proposals will be evaluated by an art jury, which will select two artists to make the awards. Each artist will receive a $500 commission for the project. The program is thus achieving two aims: raising awareness of the environment, and supporting local artists and the Encinitas arts community.

The EAP award is the first such award in San Diego County, and one of few in the nation.

The deadline for artists to submit their proposals is 5.00 pm July 23. EAP organizers might consider working with a postcard printing company to create cards to mail to local artists, to remind them of this opportunity.
