Costa Mesa brings Broadway tale to life

Vanguard University’s Theatre Department is presenting a live performance of Guys and Dolls, offering audiences a lively take on the classic Broadway tale of romance and chance.

The musical, featuring lyrics and music by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, follows two couples navigating love and ambition through 1940s New York City. The story revolves around Nathan Detroit’s quest to secure a venue for his secret gambling game, Sky Masterson’s pursuit of Sarah Brown, and Adelaide’s long-awaited wedding after a 14-year engagement.

Audiences can expect energetic choreography, memorable songs, and high-spirited performances that highlight the wit and humor that have made Guys and Dolls a staple of musical theater. Since its Broadway debut in 1950, the show has garnered critical acclaim, more than 1,200 performances, and multiple prestigious awards, including Tonys, Drama Desk Awards, and Oliviers. This production aims to capture the same charm while providing a modern, accessible presentation for all ages.

Tickets are available at $25.24 for general admission and $20.98 for seniors and children, including service fees. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, as sales close on the day of the show. The theater offers free parking, and doors open 30 minutes before the performance.
