Two groups that defined “cool” in the 1970s are coming to Costa Mesa.
Kool & the Gang are touring and bringing their friends, The Family Stone, with them. Both groups were an intrinsic part of pop music in the 1970s.
Kool & the Gang, who had a R&B/funk/jazz sound, were able to cross through musical genres to enter the mainstream. The band has sold 70 million albums throughout the world in their career, and influenced younger singers such as Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, and Kriss Kross.
In performance, the outfit mixes old favorites and new songs that sizzle with energy. Kool & the Gang are now celebrating 50 years in showbusiness and released their latest album, “Perfect Union,” in 2021.
Jerry Martini is one of the founding members of Sly & The Family Stone, and he and Phunne Stone, who is the daughter of Cynthia Robinson and Sly Stone, are performing their greatest hits. Sly & The Family Stone were a solid mainstream outfit, and were also interracial – arguably the first such band in the history of rock and roll. Their message was one of love, peace, and social consciousness, which they shared through hits like “I Want to Take You Higher” and “Dance to the Music.”
This blast from the past is scheduled for July 15 at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa. To advertise events like this, organizers can turn to poster printing.
