Comedy mystery in Costa Mesa

A play based on a film based on a board game is coming to Costa Mesa.

The classic game Cluedo, which is known as Clue in North America, was developed by Anthony E. Pratt, a British designer of board games. He created the game in 1943 and it was released in 1949. The object of the game is to discover who committed a murder, in which room, and using what weapon, which has given rise to comments like “Colonel Mustard in the library with a lead pipe.”

The game spawned a 1985 film directed by Jonathan Lynn. Among the ensemble cast were Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, and Lesley-Ann Warren.

Now the game and movie have served as inspiration for a stage version. Sandy Rustin has adapted the classic game/film for the stage, with Eric Price and Hunter Foster adding additional material. A review says that the stage version:

“. . . effortlessly harkens back to vaudevillian silliness and broad laughs, while it simultaneously explores darker genre impulses and intrigue.”

Theater patrons have a chance to support Miracles for Kids by donating travel wipes, tissues, and hand sanitizers via the organization’s Box of Miracles, which can be found in the lobbies at the Orchestra and Plaza levels.

Clue – the Musical opens at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on July 23 and runs through July 28. Organizers of events like this often use poster printing to create advertising for them.
