Special event at museum in Carson

An unusual museum in Carson will be shut soon for a special event.

The International Printing Museum will be closed to the public for a day, in order to allow Boy Scouts to earn a merit badge. In particular, scouts who attend the session will earn two merit badges in a single day: the Pulp and Paper merit badge, and the Graphic Arts merit badge.

There will be 10 stations set up for the day, and scouts will rotate among them, learning every part of the paper and printing industries, from such subjects as screen printing and offset lithography, to how the paper industry uses digital design technology, and how it uses and manages the forests it owns.

Each participant will be able to grind pulp, operate an offset press, screen Print a shirt of their own, make a sheet of paper by themselves, and use an antique press to Print a card using the letterpress process. In addition to participating in these activities, the scouts will also learn about the paper industry from educators and experts who will be giving presentations.

The fee for the event is $50, and covers everything for the entire day. Merit Badge Day is August 22, with the event beginning at 8:00 am, and going through to 3:00 pm. The museum is on Torrance Boulevard. The elements of graphic design can be a suitable topic of events like this.
