The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is encouraging everyone to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s accomplishments by taking part in a day of service on his birthday.
A number of celebrations are planned throughout the nation, with varying themes, but all centering on the idea of giving back to society and helping others.
The celebration for the Los Angeles area will be held in Carson, at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. The hosts for this event are the UNCF Los Angeles Inter-Alumni Council (IAC), and UNCF Los Angeles. Over 600 alumni of HBCU schools (the acronym stands for “historically black colleges and universities”), along with supporters and local officials, will gather to discuss ways of implementing change, and providing students of color with a superior education. DeKalb County, Georgia's chief executive officer, Michael Thurmond, is set as the keynote speaker. Events like this are a perfect setting for organizers to create special decorations by using banner printing.
In Minneapolis, CNN Tonight host Don Lemon is the keynote speaker at an event with more than 2,000 anticipated attendees, including elected members of the U.S. Congress, and the mayors of both St. Paul and Minneapolis.
In New York, nearly 700 attendees are expected, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, while the event in South Carolina will feature Cyrus Birch, who starred in the hit film ‘Black Panther’. A celebration is also planned in Detroit. The Carson event takes place this Saturday, January 26, at 8:30 am.
