Jazz duo to make Scottsdale swoon

Scottsdale’s Ravenscroft venue is hosting a performance by jazz saxophonists Adam Roberts and Dave Schmidt this fall.

Using the tenor sax, Roberts and Schmidt pay homage to traditional standards, hard bop, bebop, and more contemporary jazz. The duo also specializes in modal jazz, a subgenre pioneered by Miles Davis that uses musical scales rather than chords as its foundation.

The show will also feature plenty of improvisation, which in the aforementioned modal jazz subgenre can incorporate everything from playing with rhythm to melody and timbre for different emotional effects.

As two staples of the local music scene in Arizona, the Chandler-based Roberts and Phoenix-based Schmidt are multi-instrumentalists with a track record of collaborating with others.

Roberts has performed with pop stars like Jennifer Hudson, Idina Menzel, Reba McIntyre, and Michael Bublé, with the latter also working with Schmidt in a musical capacity. Schmidt is a regular collaborator with the Phoenix Symphony and has also worked with The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Delfonics, among others.

Tickets for the performance range in price from $35 to $60. The Ravenscroft venue also offers entrees for sale created specifically to coincide with the vibe of the concert.
