Art center holds Mexican festival
Mesa Arts Center will be celebrating the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with two days of Latin American culture and art.
A Mercado Marketplace will offer contemporary and traditional items such as Mexican arts and crafts, and jewelry from local vendors and artisans. Live entertainment will be provided. A selection of food vendors will be selling items like roasted corn, paletas, hot dogs, crepes, Caribbean food, and Mexican treats.
Attendees may view artists demonstrating what they do, and many will be painting faces in the traditional, distinctive Dia de los Muertos style. Artmaking activities will include printmaking using custom-designed stamps, sugar skull workshops, and Papel Picado cut outs (an intricate traditional Mexican paper craft). Other possible workshops will be papier mâché sculpturing, copper skull crafting, and Alebrije, which involves making colorful Mexican folklore creatures.
The community is invited to submit entries to the Altar Contest, which offers shrines to remember the deceased. Judging will be done on contemporary and traditional approaches, written meaning and dedications, design and creativity. Winners will receive museum gift certificates.
Five sponsorship levels are available - Sol $2,500, Mariposa $5,000, Catrina $10,000, Marigold $15,000, and Presenting $20,000. Each sponsorship level comes with the sponsor's logo design printed on all event advertising.
Dia de los Muertos will take place at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E Main Street, on October 19 and 20 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
