Consultants appointed to examine port project

Anchorage's Port of Alaska is the gateway for commodities and consumer goods to be shipped throughout the state, but the facility is deteriorating. Officials recently hired consultants to determine the best way to modernize the port.

The Enterprise and Utility Oversight Committee, part of the Anchorage Assembly, approved a contract recently with Ascent PGM, a project management company, and Northern Compass Group, a consulting firm, to study the port. The contract is worth $45,000.

Earlier this year, the Assembly agreed to provide as much as $100,000 to consultants, who would review all aspects of the project to expand the port, including why costs have risen so dramatically. The Assembly will also ask the consultants to determine what needs to be done about the design of the port, its infrastructure, and the amenities associated with it. They will also have to determine how the project can be funded.

The initial price for the expansion was $350m, with the U.S. Maritime Administration handling the project. However, construction difficulties caused delays, forcing Anchorage to sue to recoup lost funds. A new, smaller port design was created, but the price rose to almost $2bn. The consultants will have to consider these aspects of the project.

However, the importance of the port means repairs have to be made. Port engineers have stated the corrosion has advanced to the point where some docks will not be usable after another 10 years.
