The Anchorage School District (ASD)’s annual art show, which features works by students in grades kindergarten through twelve, is now open at the Anchorage Museum.
The Fine Arts Coordinator of the district, Leah Maltbie, pulled the show together, displaying photographs, sculpture, drawings, and paintings. Some of the works could be seen as cutting-edge, such as a video by Aaron Porter, who is a senior at East High. Entitled ‘To Be’, the video is played on a constant loop at the entrance and shows someone who appears to be a young man in drag, wearing a long red skirt, dancing on a beach.
Another exhibit was sponsored by the Downtown Partnership, in conjunction with the Municipality, and featured trash bins that were bear-proofed, and then painted with various designs. Some were representations of the region’s plants and animals, while others were abstract works. After the show is over, the city will bolt the bins to sidewalks throughout the downtown area.
The centerpiece of the show is two huge murals. One is by students from J. Bera’s classes at Eagle River High School, and is a young boys’ portrait. The other is a grid composed of black-and-white portraits from the classes conducted by R. Wall at West High.
The show runs through April 7. Organizers of exhibits like this can help patrons enjoy it even more by using brochure printing to create a guide to the show.
